SHIMANO CORE BAITCASTING REELS The NEW Shimano Core Reels are designed to be the ULTIMATE, lightweight baitcasting reels. Made with magnesium frames and side plates, the Core offers two retrieve speeds: 6.2:1 and 7.0:1 on the FV flipping version. The standard Shimano Core Reel version for all around fishing, weighs in at 6.1 ounces with a 6.2:1 gear ratio. SHIMANO TORSA REELS High Speed. High Power. With the Shimano Torsa Reels, Shimano included the largest drive gear they could. The amount of power generated by a Shimano Torsa Reel drivetrain, oversized handle shank and Ergonomic Power Grip is unbelievable. Along with today’s super braided lines, Shimano Torsa Reels ushered in new meaning to “sizing down” to tackle powerful gamefish. Also contributing to the power of the reel is a Super Stopper® one-way roller bearing with Assist Stopper back-up ratchet anti-reverse system. The system has no backplay for solid hooksetting power and the reliability of two antireverse systems. The Shimano Torsa Reels oversized drag washer, can generate incredible drag pressures for a reel its size, and is created using the same proven material used in the Shimano Tiagra Reels series of 2-Speed lever drag reels. Due to how lever drags are constructed, they are inherently poor casters. Not with a Shimano Torsa Reel. First, because of meticulous machining of the Shimano Reel Cold Forged Aluminum spool, the overall weight of the spool was reduced to lower the startup inertia. At the same time, most of the mass is distributed outward. Secondly, Shimano Reels added the Variable Brake System (VBS®) which, since 1992, has proven itself in baitcasting reels, such as the Shimano Calcutta and Chronarch® reels. And lastly, the handle side of the spool is taller than the non-handle side. This extended spool lip gives the angler a very consistent surface to thumb during the cast. It has shown to be valuable as it provides more manageability than thumbing the inconsistent surface of the line on the spool.
